G.W.R. SIGNAL LEVER DESCRIPTION BRASS LABLE PLATE. STOCK PROO39

on Mon, 08/10/2018 - 11:30

This is rare survivor from the early GWR stud and double twist frame days.

These frames had centers of 5 1/4" between each lever with a wooden label board running the length of the frame supported on short ornate cast iron pillars. To theses boards were screwed a length of brass about 6 to 8 feet in length which was beautifully hand engraved all the information about the levers function.

Numbers of the levers were on plates affixed to the levers.

When they developed the 4" center frames it was too difficult for the signalman to see the faceplates clearly so this system was abandoned

New description plates were vetted to the levers only. Most of the old label boards were recovered and recycled into instruments shelf and instruments. This example has been used twice with nice descriptions.
